Age Action is alarmed by the findings of the latest HIQA reports into the standard of care being provided at Aras Attracta in Co. Mayo.
“We are concerned that the abuse and sub-standard care at this centre for people with intellectual disabilities previously came to light as a result of a Prime Time investigation in December and had not come to light prior to the RTE undercover reporter going into the home,” Age Action spokesperson Eamon Timmins said.
“When the issues of serious sub-standard care were highlighted, assurances were given by the HSE that the issues would be addressed. But then, almost two months later, an unannounced inspection by HIQA found that the level of care being provided at Aras Attracta was still sub-standard.”
The report of the HIQA inspection in January, published today, found that the home failed to meet standards in key areas including the administration and control of medicines, staffing and the provision of basic dignity and privacy to the residents.
“Many of the residents are unable to make complaints on their own behalf,” Mr Timmins said.
“Their families have put their trust in the HSE to provide proper care for their loved ones. The HSE is continuing to fail these residents and breach the trust placed in them by their families.”
